Who founded the Feldenkrais Method?
The Feldenkrais Method was founded in the mid-20th century by an Israeli scientist and Judo master named Moshe Feldenkrais. Prior to developing his method, Feldenkrais worked in the lab of the Nobel-prize-winning physicist Frederic Joliot-Curie. While in Paris, he also earned a black belt from Kano Jigaro, the creator of Judo. After severely injuring his knee playing soccer, Feldenkrais refused a risky surgery and instead used his expertise in engineering and martial arts to learn to walk again without pain.
Yet when he shared his ‘exercises’ with friends, at first they didn’t work. Only then did he realize it wasn’t just what he was doing, but how he was doing it - his curiosity, motivation and sensitivity - that truly made the difference. It is this combination of biomechanics with neuroscience and psychology that makes the Feldenkrais Method so powerful.
Since then the Method has spread around the world helping everyone from disabled children to elite athletes move and live with greater ease and confidence.
How does the Feldenkrais Method apply to my instrument?
This program offers much more than just general body awareness for the general musician. It understands the unique needs of violinists and violists, and that’s why all of our workshops focus on a specific physical aspect of violin/viola playing.
I’m an amateur musician. Is this program also for me?
Yes! This program is for any musician who wishes to feel better and sound better. The lessons explore ideas so simple yet so challenging that cellists of any age, experience or level will benefit.
I am injured and currently unable to play. Can I still do the lessons and workshops?
Yes! First come for a Discovery Session so we can plan the best path forward for you. Sometimes it makes sense to start with individual lessons and then ease into group classes, while other times it makes sense to jump right into both.
Book a 1.5-hour Discovery Session to experience Michael's approach firsthand. This session includes:
- Clarifying your physical, technical and musical goals
- Assessing your self-body-instrument relationship
- Experiencing a full Feldenkrais lesson, on and off your violin or viola
- Planning your healing and learning journey
